This is the day we take time out to honor our fathers, grandfathers and those "significant other" men that have influenced our lives for the good. We tend to get together -- perhaps have a barbeque. This is when we give Dad the time he needs to relax and do the things he likes. Kids make neat cards in school, agree to wash the car, mow the lawn & empty the garbage without being asked. All this, so Dad won't have to do it this week! Make Dad's favorite goodies and make him feel like a KING! For many, our fathers have passed away so "Father's Day" takes on a new meaning. We can honor our forefathers by doing our family history, and writing our recollections of our fathers and grandfathers -- thereby giving a sense of "who we are" to the generations that follow. HISTORY - "The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honored by their children." "The majority will have no knowledge of the fact that the first Father's Day observance was held on July 5, 1908, at Fairmont, West Virginia. In 1908, as Independence Day neared, Mrs. Charles (Grace) Clayton at Fairmont continued to think how important and how loved most fathers are. [...] Just two months earlier, on May 10, 1908, Mother's Day had originated some 20 miles away at Webster, W. Va. (near Grafton).." See: http://www.wvculture.org/goldenseal/fathersday.html "The president of the Chicago branch of the Lions' Club, Harry Meek, is said to have celebrated the first Father's Day with his organization in 1915; and the day that they chose was the third Sunday in June..." Here are some great web sites to do just that!
