He was appointed Sergeant from Private Oct. 22, 1861 and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant February 13, 1862. He was in the hospital in March and April, 1862. He resigned due to illness November 4, 1862. His request for discharge was first disapproved on August 23, 1862, and later approved for "...suffering from debility acompanied with affliction of lung." Another item reports "bronchial _______." This is from his records from the National Archives.
