Barney Walker - My grandfather

Posted by Paul Walker <boghots@bigfoot.com> on Tue, 08 Jul 2003, in response to Walker family from Arkansas, posted by Pam Walker on Mon, 08 Apr 2002

Hello Pam, I'm the grandson of Barney Walker, who was born in Arkansas in 1876. It is my understanding that my great- grandfather (John?) was a justice of the peace, minister, and law officer. Barney moved from Arkansas to Oregon, in about 1900. Two elder daughters were born in Arkansas: Myrtle in 1897, and Faye in 1899(?) The remaining eight children born to he and my grandmother, Stacey Mangrum Walker, were born here in Oregon. My dad, Kenneth Edwin, was born in Drain, Oregon in 1920, and passed away here in Springfield, Or. in 1991. I'll be 49 years old in November, having been born to Kenneth and Margarett Austill Walker here in Eugene in 1954. I have one remaining aunt, Joyce Walker Bates still alive, and residing here in the Eugene/Springfield area. She is my dad's younger sister, being born in Drain in 1922.

Other Walker relatives in Arkansas that I personally met when I was a child were of the Jowers family. It is my understanding that my grandfather was from the area near Jonesboro, prior to moving to Oregon. I learned in the year preceding my dad's death that my grandfather's "move" to Oregon was set in motion by his apparently having been in a fracus with someone over matters concerning inappropriate intentions toward my grandmother. After several unheeded warnings, I was told that this unwanted suitor was sent to his maker by my grandfather, but I know no details. It would seem that my great grandfather interceded in matters following the death of this individual, and it was determined that grandad's future was much brighter if he took up residence a long ways away. Oregon was as far as he could go without a lengthy swim, and he spent the rest of his life here logging, and living in timber country.

I'd enjoy corresponding with you, and finding out more about my Arkansas relatives. I'll look forward to hearing from you, and I may be able to find more detailed information to contribute to the overall efforts at Walker family research.
