Van Dijk/Van Dyke
Posted by Dotty Smith <wordsmith@mei.net> on Tue, 13 Mar 2007
My great-grandmother, Sybrig Jongbloed, was born in Friesland, Netherlands, on December 1, 1849. She married Tjerk Esther. Yes, Esther is the surname. They boarded the ship Arizona in Liverpool on May 30, 1890, and that is where the records for Sybrig end. She must have died on the ship or in quarantine at the Port of New York or on a ship returning her to Friesland. She did not die in the Netherlands.Sybrig's sister, Grietje Jongbloed, married Anne Van Dijk. They sailed for New York from Liverpool on the Majestic, arriving in New York on June 10, 1890. They lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grietje died before 1910. Anne's name was changed to Andrew Van Dyke. Their daughter Jeltje's name was changed to Josephine Van Dyke, and her sister Maria Mintje Van Dijk's name became Mary Van Dyke. I have been unable to trace them from there.
I would like to correspond with any Jongbloed or Youngbloed descendant who may be able to help with this family mystery. Thank you.
Dotty Smith
