Dutch Stigner family
Posted by Jonathan Stigner <jonathanstigner@yahoo.co.uk> on Fri, 21 Apr 2006, in response to stigner family, posted by S.Stigner on Thu, 20 Apr 2006
Hi Shirley,
It was great to hear from you. Our family originally came from the Alsace (a German speaking region of France) and had the original surname Steckinger. They turn up in Swalmen (Limberg region of Holland, and also a German speaking area) in 1748, and because of the different German dialects the name goes through a metemorphosis to become Stigner. I had long suspected that one or more members of the family went to the US, but up until now have found no documentation of this. Here are some names and dates that might help in your research:
Joannes Wolfgangus Steckinger/Stigner after 1757 (John Wolfgang)
Tilmanus Stighner/Stigner Born in 1795
Jean Gerard Stignaire/Stigner Born iin 1816 (John Gerard)
Frederic Auguste Stignaire/Stigner Born in 1822
These are members who 'disappear' from the records in Swalmen. Joannes Wolfgangus had a child out of wedlock and vanishes, and I suspect he might have gone to the US to start a new life there. There is a story from Grundy in the Appalacians regarding a German trapper named Stigner who founded the town; Joannes' brother, Fredericus, was a hunter when he arrived in Swalmen.
I would be glad to hear any information you might find, and if you you need any other information, please get in contact.
All the best,
Jonathan
