Moro Phillips portrait
Posted by Julie McCay Turner <jmcct@verizon.net> on Sat, 04 Dec 2010, in response to Portrait of Moro Phillips, posted by Emelyn Kirkland on Mon, 16 Aug 2010
Good morning, Emelyn!Your August 16th post to the Rootsweb genealogy forum never reached me (my e-mail has changed long since 2004’s original post) but it turned up in my occasional Google search for ‘moro philllips’ today.
As you can perhaps tell, I'm both e-mailing you directly and using the genweb reply.
Great fun to hear from you, and I’m very curious about your picture. It would be the one noted in the Google Books link to the Exhibitors in the Royal Academy link, right? (Here’s hoping that the link comes through and you can click it if you’re not already familiar with it.
I’m guessing that it portrays the grandson of Moro Phillips (my great-great grandfather) who came from an obscure place in Poland, now lost in family secrets. He left after the November uprising, spent time in Galveston and New Orleans before settling in Philadelphia and raising six children. After his death, several of his children (Moro Jr, Marshall, Frederick, Mary and Ella left the US for Great Britain. Only Frederick returned and I believe and his wife Julia Stewart would be the parents of the child in your portrait since there’s also a portrait of Frederick and his sister Julia (Twa Bairns by Sir John Everett Millais, attached) from about the same time as your grandfather’s picture.
If you have or can easily conjure up a jpg image of your portrait, I’d very much enjoy seeing it and sharing it with my family since the Google Books link has no images.
Warm, if belated, regards,
Julie Turner
