Portrait of Moro Phillips

Posted by Emelyn Kirkland <Moppetkir@aol.com> on Mon, 16 Aug 2010, in response to Moro Phillips, posted by Julie Turner on Sun, 26 Sep 2004

I own a portrait of a Moro Phillips as a boy painted by my grandfather Julian Story 1856-1919. The painting is dated 1890 and signed. It is of a boy of 7 to 10 years of age in a kilt sitting on a bench with a large potted lily beside him. I have been told that he was a twin and that the painting was executed on the Isle of Man or the Isle if Wight.
My father bought it at Freeman's auction house in the 1960s and showed it to my grandfather's widow, Elaine Story who had married J. Story in 1909 long after the painting was made.
