Newbie question - Please help

I am real new to researching my family heritage. just any ones opinion- which site, program is the best to do so. is ancestry.com better than say legacyfamily tree? or family search. I am not opposed to paying but if one that is free is just as good that's great. I guess I want to know if paying for ancestry.com is worth it? or what is anyone's opinion out there.
