Nationality of Helin

Posted by Charlie Helin <chelin@me.com> on Wed, 30 Dec 2009, in response to Nationality of Helin, posted by Chris Helin on Wed, 31 Dec 2003

My name is Charlie Helin, since two years back I relocated from Stockholm, Sweden to Boston, MA together with my wife and two kids. The Helin family I'm closest related have traces to Upsala (Sweden) and Varmland (Sweden). Right now the majority of them are living in Gothenburg (Sweden).

My family have made some research in the name. Since Sweden has had censuses going on since the 1500 there is much documents to be found. According to it the research the name seems to appear in sweden around the 1620 when a wave of immigrants from Wallonia settled down in sweden to work in the iron mines. The name was originally (Hélin), but since apostrophes aren't regularly used in sweden it was removed to become Helin.

The reason for the finnish accounting of the name is because finland used to be part of sweden until it was occupied by russia in 1809 until 1917.
