Looking for William Cook, My Grandfather

The odds are against it, but I would love to find my maternal grandfather, William Cook. He is Native American. He was in Germany (Gelhausen?) around 1947 when my mother was born. He was in the military. My grandmother's name is Elisabeth. My mother says that's all she knows about him. She believes he abandoned her before she was born. It would mean a lot to me to know the real story. All of my other grandparents died before I was born. It's possible that he may still be alive.
