italian family and Ireland family how did this happen?

My last name is McCauley, we have Italians, african ammericans and also caucasions in our family, but my older generation say that we come from a long back ground of italians, but our name doesn't sound italian how can this be so ..we also have some in our family that have the ireland heritage, which do we claim? Please help.
