GARDNER-ROBERTS
Posted by Howard Wayne Roberts <robertsthebruce@i12.com> on Thu, 03 Jul 2008, in response to GARDNER-ROBERTS, posted by Warren Wetmore on Sat, 01 Jan 2005
Roberts is not necesearily a Welsh surname. Fixed heridetary Welsh surnames did not come into force until the act of Union with England in 1536, and then it took some time before it was adopted by all. There are many instances of it in England long before this time, and it's also recorded within the Doomsday book. It's also a Scottish surname being a sept of Clan Robertson. Gardner can also be a Scottish surname, sept of Clan Gordon.
There were many Gardner/Roberts marriages in Gloucestershire, England. Indeed my 4th great uncle, Thomas Roberts married Harriet Gardner in Cheltenham in 1813. Both Harriet and Thomas were descended from Stroud families. There was an earlier marriage nearby in Stroud, Gloucestershire in 1689!
