Maundrill Origins

Posted by Mathew Maundrill <mathew@thinktmb.com> on Thu, 08 May 2008, in response to Maundrill origin, posted by Peter Norman on Tue, 01 Feb 2005

From what I've uncovered to date, there are two potential sources of the name. The middle English varient is a derivative of the word Maunder, which means basketmaker or weaver - Maundrill would therefore be the village basketmaker.

An older and infintely more exciting version is celtic in derivation - going back to Old English/Middle French and is a derivative of Comaunder (Commander) abbreviated to maunder the Maundrill would be the village war leader or clan leader.
