where did my surname come from?

Could you please tell me where did my surname come from. Did someone just randomly decide to call them selves by that name?? And why Livingstone?
I've heard from a very reliable source 'Simon Google ' that surnames originated from the jobs that people had. Is that true? and if so again why 'Livingstone'?
