Hi, Jannis
What a pleasant surprise! At last, some Kominis has responded!
I know that our name is found in Ipiros, as well in North Ipiros (in today's Albania), but my family has since 4 generations lived in the village of Meropi (then called Tsaoussi, after the turkish police station found there)in Messinia, 25 kms, north of Kalamata, next to the town of Meligala.
According to stories heard from my ancestors, one Kominis named Polichronis, has moved at youngster age, around 1800, somewhere from Ipiros to our village, as assistant boy to a person named Georgakopoulos, who traded domestic animals all over Greece. That person had no descendants and bad relations with his relatives, so, as a revenge, all his estate had been transferred to the boy.
Some of Polichronis'(or Chronis) descendants, immigrated to U.S. at early 1900's, but they have used te name "Cummings". Some of them I have already found and even met, but the name is quite common in U.S.(Irish root).
During my Genealogy investigations I've found Kominis also in Serbia, Italy (area of Venice), Asia minor and Macedonia. By the way, when searching in the internet with the word kominis, I had -very surpisely- hundreds of answers from the far east especially from Thailand!!. What a surprise, so many Kominis there!. Unfortunately they were all in Thai language and I could not undersand what is going on! Finally I discovered that kominis in Thai means "communist"!!!
Another quite numerous wing of the Kominis family, leaves around Livadia in Greece, which -I believe-has the same Ipirotic origin.
I personally leave in Athens since 1963, and work as a telecomms engineer in OTE. I have two children, 22 and 15.
I would be very happy to hear more news from you, especially if the above story means something tou you or to your family.
Have a nice day!
Dimosthenis
