Maundrill origin
Posted by Peter Norman <petrosn@bigfoot.com> on Tue, 01 Feb 2005, in response to where does my surname originate from, posted by mark maundrill on Thu, 05 Aug 2004
MarkMaundrill is one of four variant surnames- Maundrell/Maundrill/Mandrell/Mandrill
The origins of the name are not particularly clear but it does appear to be Norman-French with the first reference to Maundrell being in a 14th century record.
From at least 1500 these names in England have been concentrated in Wiltshire and Somerset, with scattered occurrences elsewhere plus the inevitable congregation in London.
The Maundrill variation appears to be peculiar to one village in Somerset with all occurrences from 1800 onwards being attributable to the mining village of Timsbury. But in the 1860s many of them migrated to the Yorkshire coalfields, apparently with two brothers walking there! This spelling variation is now mostly found in Yorkshire
