Last name

Posted by Randy DePriest <depriest4ireland@cleaninter.net> on Tue, 14 Dec 2004, in response to Meaning of last name, posted by De Priest on Tue, 31 Aug 2004

There is some speculation as to the meaning of our last name. A cousin of mine has been doing research into the DePriest family for a number of years. The original family was, of course, in France. They were Huguenots that fled France. The name took many forms, but DePriest was the form that the man who settled in Virgina took. We were told that it meant "anti-priest", probably because of the persecution that they endured from the French Catholic church. Have you found any other information? Please let me know if you have.
Thanks - Randy DePriest
