another distanced mescalero
Posted by Lee Santa Ana <leesantaana@att.net> on Mon, 13 Dec 2004, in response to How do you get recognized as a mescalero apache?, posted by Francisco Herrera on Wed, 03 Dec 2003
I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas...now living in Portland, OR. To my discredit--I disassociated myself with my Apache heritage for the first 30 or so years of my life (trying to fit in to corporate/white collar america). It has only been in the last 10 years or so that I have embraced my culture and tried to get back to the customs and practices that my parents tried to teach me so many years ago. I was beginning to think that I was the only person with Mescalero blood in me to not be registered or know how to register. It sort of makes me relieved to know that I am not alone, and that I am justified in my feelings of disdain for registry....knowing that not being registered does not make me any less Mescalero!Display message for printing | Print Entire Thread
