Phyllis O. Whitten book
Posted by Geoffrey O. Whitten <geoffwh@gowhitten.com> on Sat, 24 Apr 2004, in response to Samuel Fogg, posted by Rhonda Fogg on Mon, 27 Aug 2001
Hi,I am the son of Phyllis Whitten. The book has been out of print for almost 30 years and because of the ongoing interest in this book, I have scanned the entire onto a CD. The original printer's galleys were destroyed by the printer, so the pages on the CD were scanned from my mother's original manuscript sheets (all 1,700+ type-written pages) and contain some printer's marks, notes, and a double set of handwritten page numbers. All the original pages are there (along with some duplicates), along with the photographs and the whole book has been scanned in the Acrobat PDF format so one can search for names and places with relative ease. As with any OCR (optical character recognition) program, it is not 100% perfect, but worked for every name I selected at random (except my own name last name in the Index - we re-scanned the book with another program). You can always cross reference the Index as with a "paper" book.
My mother is currently doing an addendum that should be ready by early summer, so for the people who want (need) the CD now; I will send them the updated version at no additional cost when it is available. Most likely I will try to clean up the pages and remove some of the duplicated pages in the amended CD. The cost of the CD is $30.00, which includes shipping in the US and Canada.
Thanks for the interest.
Geof Whitten
