Szillat spelling

Posted by Mike Szillat <szills@sssnet.com> on Wed, 10 Dec 2003, in response to surnames, posted by dona on Wed, 19 Mar 2003

My ancestor Adam Szillat (b.1850) came over from East Prussia when it was part of Germany (now Poland/Lithuania). They have always considered themselves German by heritage. I have heard several interpretations of the name (German, Prussian, various other Baltic/Slavic). We only have records with the spelling Szillat. In the Baltic/Slavic languagues, this would be the same pronunciation as Schillat in German (shill-LOT). I cannot say for certain whether Schillat is a Germanized form of a Baltic/Slavic name or Szillat is a Baltic/Slavic form of a German name. Most of the Szillats who remain in Europe seem to be in the former East Germany. My American relatives pronounce the name either ZILL-it or zill-LOT. You can contact me at szills@sssnet.com.
