Millards

Posted by Robert A. VanLew <vanlewbob@aol.com> on Fri, 15 Jun 2001

My wife's great, great-grandfather was Samuel H. Millard, born in Sullivan County, TN in 1820. He became a leading preacher in East Tennessee in the Christian Church (also known as Disciples of Christ, Church of Christ, and also in the northeast part of our country as the Christian Connection. His great-grandfather was Timothy Millard, who came from Ireland to America in the latter part of the 17th century and settled in Pennsylvania.

My research concerns both my wife's ancestors, and also the history of the Christian Church. It includes references to one or more David Millards, with probable con-nections to West Bloomfield, NY, and also maybe to Pennsylvania. The David Millard in NY was the editor of a journal, "The Gospel Luminary" from about 1825 to 1831. About that time, it merged into "The Christian Palladium", by Joseph Badger. There is also a mention of a Millard having written a book or treatise titled "The True Messiah". I have also a copy of an article published in 1844 titled "Christians, or Christian Connection" from a book, "AN ORIGIAL HISTORY OF THE RELIGIOUS DENOMINATIONS, published in 1844, compiled by L. Daniel Rupp, of Lancaster, PA, and published possibly both in Philadelphia and Harrisburg. This David Millard is stated also to be the author of a book, "Travels in Egypt, Arabia Petrea, and the Holy Land". I feel sure that "our" Samuel H. Millard is related to one (or more) of the David Millard(s) mentioned above in Pennsylvania and/or New York. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. And I am willing also to share all of the information which I have on Samuel H. (quite a bit!), and the little I have on "David". Thanks! Bob VanLew.
