  My grandfather was Bernard Meatte (died 1957) lived in the area around Portageville/Wardell. He had 2 sons, Neal and Grover; and 3 daughters,Thelma(my mother) Rachel and Valerie.
  Neal and Grover had no children. Thelma married Louis J. Douglas (2 sons and a daughter surviving; Valerie married Harry Mcgee. She died in 1944 or 1945;1 son. Rachel married,had a son and died somswhere near 1930. I never knew her married name nor did I ever meet that cousin.

  We moved to Florida in the 40's and I had very little contact with relatives.

  I was born to Marvin L Meatte and Nina Wright Meatte in The Dalles Ore. My grandparents were William Bradford Meatte and Mildred Unetta Martin Meatte who lived in Hayti and Portageville Mo.When we moved to Ore we pronounced our name me-at. I understand the name in Mo was pronounce Met. I would like to hear from anyone with ties to Portageville or Hayti to respond. Thank you. Jim Meatte

    My grandparents are Louis D. Meatte and Nadine Tanner Meatte. I was born in St. Charles, Mo., but have lived in Florida since I was 8 months old. I have family that lives in Portageville, Mo. My grandfather's sister Tootsie Meatte Pike still lives there. We do pronounce the name Met.I have a family tree at home that my father's (Louis D. Meatte, Jr.) cousin Mark Meatte did. I believe the first names listed on it is Sam Meatte and Mary Florida Lesieur. I do know Sam Meatte was in the Confederate Army and later opened a saloon in Portageville. He was among the fist settlers there. Hope that helps as I am still researching the family myself.
    P.S. There is a Meatte Park in Portageville that Luke Meatte opened and dedicated in Grover Meatte's name (his father and my grandfather's uncle, a Meatte Street and a Meatte housing complex.

  Hi. My grandfather is Louis D. Meatte and Luke Meatte was his cousin. I live in Florida, but I was born in St. Charles, Mo. I have family in Portageville. My Aunt Tootsie Pike lives there. I guess were related!!!!

    Misty: Just happened to see your note to my granddaughter, Jamie, and thought I would write to you and fill in a few answers for you.

    I'm sure your father was Doyne Meatte, whom I grew up with in Portageville, although he was a few years older than I.

    My father was Grover Cleveland Meatte and is the person the park there is named for. We (Grover's descendents)just put up a new park identification monument there last month.

    Your father and Grover were brothers, along with Gus, Ab, Della, Amelia, et al.

    Their parents were Sam Meatte and Mary Florida LeSieur, who was the Grandaughter of the third LeSieur brother to settle there, in the late 1700's, and Eustace DeLisle, one of the founders of the city itself.

    My wife, Charlotte (nee)McCrate, had fourteen children, including Jamie's father, Peter, our #3 Son.

      My gggaunt was Modest Maisonville who married Edward Meatte and Angelica Maisonville (gggaunt) who married Fransicus Meatte. Edward Meatte opened the first trading post in portageville so I understand.

      Thanks so much fo the info. My grandfather was Louis Doyne Meatte and my father is Louis Doyne Meatte, Jr (56 years old). My great aunt is Tootsie Pike (nee Meatte) married to Sam Pike. I am very interested in the Meatte family roots. I have a family tree that my father obtained for me from Mark Meatte. I would very much like to visit Portageville and go to the Meatte Memorial Park. I have seen photos and it looks very nice. I also have the newspaper from when it was dedicated and I am assuming that would be you in the photo.   Luke Meatte is my grandfather's cousin. My grandfather's name is Louis D. Meatte and they lived in St. Louis for many years. I would love to go and see Meatte Memorial Park. I haven't been to MO. since I was 10.
