McCreanor Origions
Posted by Stiofan McCreanor <jaffainchains@hotmail.com> on Thu, 29 Mar 2007, in response to just wondering, posted by steven mccreanor on Sun, 11 Feb 2007
Im a McCreanor myself from Ireland I can let you know that the name McCreanor is an variation of the gaelic name MacThreinir which was the name I had to use when I was at secondary school in Dundalk Ireland. Mac = Son Threin = strong f(ir) = man (son of the strong man) which is also associated with the name Armstrong.
McCreanors are mostly found in Ulster and it is even not a common name there but names like Traynor are.
Back years ago under the British it was illgeal to have a gaelic name so people were forced to change there names to an english version so the name McCreanor would have an ulster scot kind of sound to it and would mean it would be easier to find work and live in a British Protestant Northern Ireland.
Hope this helps.
