McLeries past and present

Posted by Wendy McLerie-Alexander <wendy.mclerie@fsmail.net> on Sat, 22 Nov 2003, in response to McLerie, posted by val on Sun, 18 May 2003

Hello
I have just seen the message board on this site after doing a web search on the name McLerie. I started to attempt a family tree for my branch of the family last weekend but I am afraid it's still early days yet. Yesterday I printed off the initial census page for 1881 with all the McLeries in Scotland. I am still untangling the information but the family groups seem to be sorting themselves out to a pattern that focusses on Paisley with three main families there, and my own branch in Fife (Dysart) all being related with the same names repeating in each branch. As I find more out I will happily share the information with you. Incidentally, there was a Captain John McLerie who was born in Ayrshire in 1809 and went to Australia in 1844. He finally became Inspector General of Police and lived in Sydney. Also my Grandfather's brother emigrated to Australia at the beginning of the century and I think became Sydney Harbour Master. My nephew is repeating the family trend and is now living and working in Sydney!
It would be great to hear from you and exchange information - even if it's way back we are probably related. There aren't that many McLeries around.
Best wishes and good luck with your search.
