Lyga (pronounced Wyga)
Posted by Jerry <jmfil@hotmail.com> on Mon, 26 Apr 2010, in response to John LYGA born between 1800 and 1849 from Galicia Russia/Austria, posted by Lauren Lyga on Wed, 05 Mar 2008
It sounds like your family is from south eastern Poland. John Lyga was a Lemko. In those days they called themselves Rusyn, Rusniaky and they spoke "po-Rusky" which means they spoke Rus language, Carpatho-Rus dialect which is now called Lemko dialect and is considered to be the most Western dialect of Ukrainian. Although some may disagree and claim it's a separate language. I speak it.I was in Biliczna a few weeks ago. There is only a church from the late 1700's standing. Its is a beautiful yet lonely site. Surrounded by beautiful hilly mountains, and one in particular named Lackowa. Right on the Slovak border.
My grandmothers sister is married to a Lyga. Maybe related to your John Lyga down the way.
In order for you to get more info you would have to contact the Ukrainian Catholic/Greek Catholic church of Poland. Specifically Golice District. They would have records of John Lyga and his birth marriage and family perhaps.
The surname Lyga is pronounced "wyga" In polish the L will have a angled line through it.
Here is a link with that surname and the village it was common in the 18-19 century in South Eastern Poland. Lyga's are very close to Biliczna where Zach got his wife from. My grandmother was born there but in the early 20th century.

Look for the L with the line through it.
