Please help me out. My mother's maiden name is Burgess.
Is this an Irish or English last name?

  My mothers madian name was also burgess and she passed it to me im sorry i dont know the meaning!! see my mom was adopted at a very young age and dont know here birthparents and her adopted parent are now both passed but i was always told that the name BURGESS is German!!

    Our first Huston to come to America from Ireland was John Huston who had a son named William. John Huston and family came to America in 1735. William was only a lad when arriving here. He grew up and married Anges Nancy Hinman who had come from Scotland. William and Agnes Nancy had a son named Thomas. Thomas married Susannah Campbell. Thomas had a son, Almanzon. Almanzon had a son, Henry Henderson, H.H had a daughter named Anna Cora who married Elbert Malachiah Wood. Anna Cora and Elbert Malachiah were my grandparents. My Dad was Henry Houston Wood.     my last name is burgess and i live in the u.s and im really wondering if the last name stays with the family or can it switch somehow. Meaning, can people with the same last name be related? in some way i find it logical that it does. any comments on this subject would be great!!

  I live in Canada and my grandfather, John Burgess moved to Canada from Merry old England. However, since I was a child, I was always drawn to the Irish culture and no one could figure out why - I was later told that burgess is in fact, of Celtic origins.........hope this helps,
