getting on the roles

How do i find out about getting on the roles. My Great Great Grandmother walked the trail of tears with her family, so it doesn't seem like i would need to go back that far, i have a few names of ancestors, but i am not sure where to go from here or who i should contact...any help would be greatly appreciated.
