help finding role number

I need information on how to go about finding a role number. What info do i need to have. The majority of our family who would have information is now deceiced and i have a few names to go by. Please let me know what steps i need to take. nnames are (joseph stanford davis, sally elizabeth malicolt davis are in the oklahoma area) also (Thomas Jack Hunt, texas area)
