The McGranes

Posted by Eoin MagRáighne <Jacqoon@lycos.com> on Wed, 15 Jan 2003, in response to Family information for James, posted by Jane McGrane on Sat, 04 Jan 2003

Holinshed's Chronicles of the Kingdom of Ireland mentions a priest called McGrane. Also, two of that name were hanged by the English in 1725 as Jacobites. There was a famous American sociologist called [interestingly] Reginald Charles McGrane. Also, regrettably, Yeats in "The Last Gleeman" [a chapter in one of his books- I can't recall which] refers to a McGrane who tried to cadge drinks in Dublin around the start of the 19th century [ I think it was] by trying to pass himself off as the poet Rafteiri Dall[Blind Raftery].
