Origin of name Harland
Posted by John Harland <jharland@telus.net> on Tue, 08 Aug 2006, in response to The origin of the name of Harland, posted by Alan Harland on Sat, 27 May 2006
For one opinion on the origin of the family name, have a look atThis item was written seven years ago, and confirms what Alan says. Further, it points out that the Harland family name is not limited to GB. German Harlands/Harlans are probably not related to those in England. Since the article was written, we determinedfrom the Norwegian Telephone Guide, that 12 or so families in Norway spell their name 'Harland'. Without exception, these are concentrated in and around the city of Tromsų in the north and on the west coast. This spelling is *unusual*, and may be a variant of 'Holand' (100+ hits), which also tends to be found in the higher latitudes of the west coast. 'Holland', 'Haaland' and 'Halland' are also found, preponderantly on the west coast, and not just in northern communes.
