Workman heritage

My son-in-law, James Slingerland, had a grandmother named Ellen Workman, whose father was Josh (James J.) Workman, and was born in Forest Hill, Michigan on Oct. 30, 1903.. He's been told she was of Indian heritage and I'm wondering how I can find that how. Thank you for whatever you can tell me.
