WOODS John and Margaret , Family Northern Ireland
Posted by Rose Crain <Foffee3@Aol.com> on Sat, 31 Dec 2005
I am looking for WOODS family members from Belfast and surrounding areas, also England and Canada.JOHN WOODS was my Grandfather and he was married to MARGARET and they lived at 9, Willowfield Gardens in Belfast, when they signed the Ulster Covenant on 28th Sept. 1912. He apparently owned a couple of shops, they may have been on the Stranmillis Road or surrounding areas (Ormeau, Lisburn Rd.). I have been told one was a hardware store and the other one Confectionery.
They later moved to DUNDONALD, That was his last residence before he passed away.
John WOODS lost an eye in the Boer War and all I remember is he had a plastic one. He also received a medal and I remember in Dundonald that someone came to interview him (around 1960?). This person interviewed him for a book about the BOER WAR as my Grandfather John WOODS was one of the oldest survivers of that war. I never did see the book nor do I remember who came to interview him.
There was a large family and of the names I can remember there was:-
Ernie Woods married to Sonia. They lived at Carryduff.
Robert Lloyd Woods, (Born 1911) MY FATHER, married to Ethel Woods nee TREACY (born 1926)
Albert Woods married to Eva lived in Whitehead, No children.
Morton Woods married and both his wife and young son ,I remember deceased and he remarried and lived in Belvoir Park, Belfast.
Stanley Woods married to Vera, had two Sons CEDRIC and GORDON. Lived on the Stranmillas Road near the Botanical Gardens. I know one of the Sons was a teacher. I believe Vera passed away in 1970/71.
Kathleen Woods married ? lived by Belfast Castle. Used to breed and show poodles at Crufts Dog show (One champion I remember by the name of Irish Coffee. I believe her Husband was Percy Duke (May have been in the Military). She had a daughter by the name of Kathleen DUKE who had I believe two girls and a boy and immigrated to Canada.
Desmond (Dessi)Woods (do not know who he married) I believe also immigrated to Canada.
Ruth Woods married a Billy Black they had a daughter Jennifer Black and I remember visiting them in Clapham Junction in 1963, London. Billy Black worked for a shoe company and lived above the premises.
Helen Woods married a Cochrane, (May be a diff spelling) She lived with Grandfather John Woods in Dundonald, N.Ireland. Helen had a daughter by the name of Valerie Cochrane who had attended Trinity College Dublin. (I believe Valerie married)
Peggy Woods married a Mr. BROWN they had a least one son and a daughter I remember. Lived outside of Belfast, I remember that they enjoyed Golf..
The above names are in no particular order of birth. I believe there was 12 children in all. One of the brothers dies young I was told he eat some rubbard pie and there was something wrong with the rubbard as apparently it had rained and the poision had gone up into the rubbard. I am not sure how much truth there is in that but I know he died at around age two/three in my Grandmother's arms and she was pregnant with my Father at the time (Robert) which caused him to have an impediment of the speech. I am told it was the shock as the child died in her arms.
I am the Daughter of Robert and Ethel Woods, (There was six children in all) I was born in Belfast and grew up first in WHITHEAD and Later in BELFAST. My Father worked as a draughtsman for Short Brothers and Harland's.
SURELY there is SOMEONE out there that remembers this family. I cannot find any trace of my relatives and would love to hear from anyone with any information on the family.
I may have missed a few family members. Any information from family members or ANYONE that may have known the family would be greatly appreciated and you can email me directly at Rosemary33@Sbcglobal.net or Foffee3@Aol.com
Regards Rosemary
