Dear Lynne,Thanks for your message. I have a great deal of information about the Nembhard family which is an adjunct to a book I am researching on George Hibbert, an early 19th century merchant politician .The Hibberts and the Nembhards were related by two marriages. To be able to help you I would need to know what ever information you might have on the branch you have married into. Broadly, modern-day Nembhards divide into black and white branches. It is not clear whether the two parts were ever related by blood. The common factor is Jamaica, where the first known Nembhard, a doctor, probably of German, and possibly aristocratic descent, established plantation and commercial interests in Jamaica inb the mid 18th century. Whether the black Nembhards were 'illegitimate'descendents of this family is probably too difficult to establish now. The published wills don't show anything , but this is not conclusive. More likely, the black Nembhards take their name from the slave owning masters of the estates they were forced to work on.The same thing seems to have happened with the Hibberts of Jamaica. Most if not all Nembhards in the UK today seem to be from the black branches. The white Nembhards seem to have either died out after their return from Jamaica to the UK in the early 19th century, or the name was lost on the marriage of daughters. I am trying to trace descendents, relatives, or friends of the late Mabel Nembhard who died around 1920, for my research work on the Hibberts. If you wish to have genealogical information on the white Nembhard line, I'll be happy to give you some references. If you have married into such a family, I would like to know more details. On the black Jamaican lines, there is a wonderful on-line Mitchell's West Indian bibliographical website for sources. Jamaica should have some genealogical websites too. Do let me know whether this is helpful to you.
Best wishes
