Troy family

Posted by sharon <trojen@ihug.co.nz> on Tue, 26 Jul 2005

I am looking for information on Richard Troy b: 1780 Ireland and his family can you help?
Richard Troy was a convict who came out on the "Atlas 1" (1), arrived 7-7-1802 (Master Richard Brooks) Sydney from Ireland. There is some confusion as to whether he was sentenced for Life or for 7 years. Colonial Secretary’s index mentions him in 1811, sentence expired. He was employed by the Government at Parramatta. Why he got sent to Hobart I have not yet found out. He died at Richmond, Tasmania, 7-8-1848, aged 68. .

Richard Troy's wife is Mary Ann Moran (or Moore, and later as Margaret Jones). She came out on the "Catherine" which made only one trip in 1813. The ship was built in New Bedford in 1811 and weighed 325 tons. The "Catherine" sailed from Falmouth 8-12-1813 with 98 female convicts and arrived in Sydney 4-5-1814. Only one convict died on the voyage. Some of the women (including Mary) were then put on the "Kangaroo" and sent to Tasmania to redress the imbalance in the sexes. Mary Ann died at Richmond, Tasmania, on the 29-9-1860, aged 70 years.
