Nembhard Origin
Posted by Rico Nembhard <shadam6@yahoo.com> on Sat, 02 Apr 2005, in response to Nembhard's from Jamaica., posted by Jerome Nembhard on Sun, 13 Feb 2005
Dear Nembhards,My name is Rico Nembhard and like many of you i also have roots which lead back to St. Elizabeth (my father). Also a farming family and one that still lives there today.
Though not the total Gospel on our Origins, my Dad has uncovered enough of our history to give us an idea of where the Nembhards came from. According to the Jamaica Almanac 1815, the owner of Honslow Plantation was the Hon B.B. Nembhard (either the Custos or Judge of the parish). Since there was no listing of a Nembhard in St. Elizabeth in the Jamaica Almanac prior to 1815, it is presumed we came to the parish shortly after 1810 when the previous Almanac was published.
However, our family goes back over 250 years in the Island as the record of the earliest Nembhard was a John Nembhard who owned a 300 acre Plantation in St. Mary. The theory is that a branch of the family broke of in the late 18th century and migrated to Clarendon and then finally to St. Elizabeth.
Interestingly for those of you who are going to be in St. Elizabeth, on the border of Junction is a small community called Nembhard town where many of my aunts, uncles and cousins reside. There you will find many of our other distaff relations such as the Ebanks, the Powells, and so on.
It was good talking to you all
