Dineen/Deneen Family Cork/Kerry

Posted by Matthew Dineen <mgnat45@yahoo.com> on Thu, 17 Mar 2005, in response to looking for information about Patrick Dineen, posted by Elaine Billings on Thu, 17 Mar 2005

Dear Elaine,

Thanks for posting to the genealogy website. Very
interesting.

There are some coincidences that suggest the
possibility that we are relatives, e.g., the
prominence of both the names Reardon and Dineen in
both our families is suggestive, and Mary Reardon and
John Dineen in particular. In addition to the fact
that my great-great-grandmother was Mary Reardon, a
brother of hers, Jeremiah Reardon, emigrated to the
United States was said to be a benefactor of my
family, including purchase of the burial plot in
Queens (New York City) where he and my
great-grandfather and other Dineens are buried. There
seems to have been a close tie between the two clans.

I don't know anything about the siblings of my
great-great grandfather Michael Dineen/Deneen (married
to Mary Reardon). Very likely he had siblings, and
they had children, one of whom could possibly have
been your Patrick Dineen, who would then be my
great-grandfather's first cousin. In which case, you
and I would be 4th cousins if I did the math right!

Your John Dineen and Mary Reardon (the baptismal
sponsors for Patrick) could have been my great-great
grandfather Michael Dineen's brother if he had a
brother John and
great-great grandmother.

Another intriguing fact is the baptism took place in
the parish of St.Brendan's in the Diocese of Ardfert
and Aghadoe, and that you say by a "minister" as
opposed to priest. I did a little checking and there
is a diocese of that name in Kerry that is part of the
Church of Ireland (Protestant). There is also a
Catholic diocese of that name. I haven't yet found
St. Brendan's to determine to which diocese it
belonged, but it will turn up. My family was Catholic
as far as I know, which would be an argument against a
relationship if yours is Protestant because I suspect
people were a little more antagonistic in those days,
and John Dineen and Mary Reardon, if Catholic, would
probably not have been sponsors for a baptism in a
different faith, and vice versa. On the other hand
it's also true, or so I was always told, that my
great-grandfather John Patrick and his siblings were
orphaned and then taken in by a Protestant Minister.
It's an amazing story if true in showing charitable
open-mindedness. Could Rev. Murphy be that man? I
don't know, but it's fun to speculate.

I'll keep giving it some thought. If I can locate St.
Brendan's, who knows, maybe I can find out some more
about my Dineens too.

I'd love to hear any other information you may have.
Thanks again for posting.

(P.S. I will post this to the website too).
