Smiths in NJ
Posted by Cindy <cynthiaweaver@webtv.net> on Tue, 05 Nov 2002, in response to Ireland / NJ, posted by Jude on Mon, 04 Nov 2002
Hey Jude (sorry, I couldn't resist)-
My great grandfather, Gardner Smith, had a sister named Nell, but our information says she lived in Kingston, NY and was a Mohawk Indian. I think the birth date would have been a bit too early to be her as well. The Smith name is not a common Irish surname. I have not seen it at all in any Irish clan nomenclature that I have researched. Our family(my maiden name is Smith) is not sure where the Smith surname came from because as I said Gardner was a Mohawk and they didn't have surnames. They must have just picked it at some point. Gardner would have been born about 1860 or so and I'm not sure if sister Nell was older or younger. Our info says that Nell married a DeGraff and continued to live in Kingston, NY well into the 1930's at least.
With a name like Smith you have to be willing to take a long shot; I wish you good luck with your search. At first glance I thought we had a match but I guess not.
Peace,
Cindy
