I am researching this Irish surname. It belonged to my great great great grandfather who was sentenced in 1796 for taking illegal oaths. His place of origin is Roscommon. He arrived in Sydney around 1796. The spelling of the name seems quite distinct and all people in Australia with that spelling are related. This spelling of the name does come from the ships manifest and the trial proceedings in the late 18th century. Can anyone help me as to its origins?Responses
