origin of last name Piña

Posted by Armando Piña <rovitoco@aol.com> on Sat, 26 Feb 2005, in response to my last name, posted by Erica Piña on Tue, 11 Jan 2005

Piña is Spanish for pine cone and pineapple. The name originates from the region of Castilla Y Leon Spain. The name is Jewish in origin. During the Spanish Inquisition Spanish Jews changed their names to avoid being killed. They eventually left Spain and one of our ancestors who fled to Holland is in a Rembrandt painting entitled the Wedding Couple (aka: The Jewish couple). My family collects everything with pineapples. My family came from Mexico but I have not been able to trace my ancestry back to Spain. There was a Piña who wrote poetry who came with Hernando Cortes into America. I believe he translated some Aztec or Mayan Poetry. I live in Texas but am visiting CA. I am using a frieds E-Mail until I can get my own computer. If you have any questions write me and I'll try & remember more info. I hope this helps you. Adios :)
