Melia Family

Posted by Mary Wilson <MaryTheresa0714@aol.com> on Sun, 16 Jan 2005, in response to melia family, posted by terri melia on Tue, 11 Jan 2005

Hi Terri,

My grandmother was Anne Melia, who was raised in Liverpool, England. I was told that the family was originally from County Mayo, Ireland and there were twelve girls and one boy in the family. Her parents were John Melia and Mary McFadden. She came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA in the 1890's. The sisters helped each other to come to Philadelphia. I don't know what happened to the brother. The name had been O'Melia but on the advise of a priest the "O" was dropped because of the anti-Irish Catholic feelings in America at the time.
