Dineen/Deneen Family Cork/Kerry

Posted by Matthew <mgnat45@yahoo.com> on Sat, 06 Mar 2004

Looking for information about my Dineen relatives (what else?)

My great-grandfather John Patrick Dineen, b. Sept. 1870, emigrated to the U.S. in 1887, not sure where he arrived but he made it to Wilmington Del. where he took up residence with an older brother Lawrence. They worked as laborers for a railroad and are listed in Wilmington City Directories incl. 1889.

John soon moved to New York City, residing per 1890 Census at 746 Greenwich Street and later in Bronx, near Jerome Avenue).

Both were sons of Michael Deneen (dairyman) and Mary Reardon, Ireland (not sure, Cor or Kerry).

In Wilmington John and Larry met the sisters Creeden/Creedon, Bridget and Hannah. Two brothers married two sisters. John married Bridget (possibly in New York) and Lawrence married Hannah and remained in Delaware. The sisters Creedon were daughters of Cornelius Creedon and Bridget (nee Quill) of Cork.

John had lived in Kilgarvan near Kenmare before emigrating. He (and other sibs) were said to have been orphans and raised by a Protestant minister. John worked as a dairyman. John and Lawrence had other sibling who included, at least, Denis (Dinneen, two n's), Catherine, and possibly a Bridget and/or Mary.

John and his wife Bridget had four children who survived to adulthood: Michael, Mary, Cornelius and John. Two others, Joseph and Hannah, "died young" according to burial stone in New York, together with Bridget herself, all of tuberculosis. I've heard it said she had been a dairymaid when living in Cork. The four children had to be placxed in a Catholic orphanage in upstate New York.

Of John's children, only Cornelius had children, 3 (John Patrick -- my father -- Cornelius Edward, and Veronica Ann). His wife was Julia Morrow )daughter of Henry Morrow and Eleanor Campbell, believed to be of Scottish heritage). John Patrick alone had children - eight in all, of whom I am one.

If you have any information that might shed light on this particular branch of Dineens or Creedens of Kilgarvan and Cork, it would be appreciated. Thank you.
