Jamaican Nembhards
Posted by Jay Nembhard <pneumatikos2003@yahoo.co.uk> on Thu, 29 Jan 2004, in response to The surname Nembhard, posted by N Nembhard on Wed, 28 Jan 2004
I too also heard that the Nembhards originally came from Germany. That they were German Jews who immigrated to Jamaica. From what I've heard it was originally NEMBHARDT. There are still some in Jamaica who spell their last name that way. My dad told me that one of my cousins actually went to Germany back in the late 80s or early 90s to investigate. He looked up some Nembhards (I guess from the phone book) and literally arrived at their doorsteps. He was welcomed as one of the family.I did a sweep on the internet and barely found any Germans with such a last name. (I did not search any phone books). It is only speculation but maybe they all got killed in concentration camps during world war 2.
That is just one theory. What puts a spanner in the works is the existence of the Honorable Ballard B Nembhard who owned alot of land in Southern St Elizabeth. This, I believe, was in the late 1700s. What makes him a spanner is that german immigration to Jamaica only took place after emancipation and that was in the 1830s, which is forty years after Ballard. Also, the term 'Honourable'speaks, not of nobility, but of some sort of prestige. Could a man of at least German origin be given such recognition by the British?
Also, my dad got someone to do an investigation on the Nembhards back in the late 80s. I can recall reading from his investigation of a female Nembhard who was to be married to a prominent man. I believe she was of high society herself. The person who was doing the investigation was working his way backwards and got up to the late 1700s before he was murdered. Just our luck!
I'm sorry I wasn't of much help. I'll be going back to Jamaica at the beginning of March and so hopefully I'll be able to see if I can get some wheels turning in a new investigation.
I know that the Nembhards of St Elizabeth are related to the Nembhards of St Catherine. I know the link between the two. What I just can't seem to connect is the Nembhards of St Elizabeth and the Nembhards of St Ann.
If anyone out there could solve the puzzle I'd greatly appreciate it. In all honesty I'm going to Montego Bay solely for pleasure next month & I probably won't get much done but I am going again later on in the year. I'll be going to Kingston on business and so maybe I can go to spanish town (I think that's the correct place) and see if I can somehow get into the records.
To all my cousins out there on the web, goodnight.
Jay Nembhard
