Airlie's

Posted by Anne Elliott <a.elliott@tesco.net> on Tue, 30 Dec 2003, in response to Airlie Family, posted by Nuala Sheahan on Tue, 30 Dec 2003

Thank you so much for your e-mail via the Irish genealogy message board. I have been trying for almost 3 years to find Airlies in Ireland as my great grandfather (and his parents before him) apparently came from Ireland but, every time I tried to find Airlies on Irish Origins it would only say "Airlie is not a common name in Ireland"!!!! I would get SO annoyed. I know it isn't common now as ALL the bloomin' Airlies seem to have migrated in the mid 1800's!! I have only just, literally within the past week, found that my great-great grandfather apparently married in February 1859 in Co. Longford. That is literally all I have. (I'm not even sure they actually did marry. They may have "just said this" as I'm finding loads of inconsistencies.) For some unknown reason I also keep finding records of different Thomas Airlie's even though, originally that is not what I am looking for?? Mind you, my gran did have a son called Thomas who died very young so, (as well as my great grandparents having a Thomas Patrick) maybe subconsciously I AM searching for Thomas's?? Anyway, my great-great grandparents who apparently married in Co. Longford were Michael Airlie and Catherine Welsh (or Welch). Michael's parents were named on his death cert in 1905 as Patrick A. and Mary Carney. I haven't found any other siblings of Michael or Catherine, as yet, but like I said, I've only just found out where they were married. I'd contacted the priest where their son Patrick was married in Dundee to see if he could help me and he mentioned 2 Joseph births to Airlies. One was to Michael & Catherine and the other to Peter, Patrick's brother. I found both of their birth and (unfortunately) death certs. Michael's Joseph died at 5 months old and Peter's died at 11 months old! Anyway, this was the first British (or Irish) certificate(s) I'd been able to find of the families and also how I found the marriage of Michael and Catherine. Patrick married Rose Ann McLaughlin in Glasgow in 1883 apparently aged 21 but he was only 47 when he died??? He died 1917 and she died 1924 (both back in Dundee). Michael (born sometime between 1835 & 1847) and Catherine (born between 1841 and 1857) seem to have stayed in Dundee, as far as I've been able to tell. Other children of Michael and Catherine were, Mary born circa 1866, Peter born circa 1869 married Jane Weir in Dundee 1891 and died 1905, Catherine born circa 1870 died 1891 a year after giving birth to an illegitimate son, Helen born circa 1871 (I can't find any trace of her after the census of 1881), John born circa 1873 (ditto as Helen), Margaret born circa 1874 married Thomas Kilduff 1894 (haven't found any more out yet about Margaret as she seems to have also disappeared after her marriage!), Michael born circa 1879 (ditto see Helen), and Rose Ann born circa 1883 I haven't found a marriage yet for Rose Ann but found an illegitimate son born to her in 1904. Catherine Welsh's parents, according to her death cert were Peter Welsh and Mary Cairns. I find this kind of strange as Michael's mother is Mary Carney!! Anyway, when Patrick died his daughter was the informant and she say Patrick's mother was Bridget O'Brien? Patrick's sister Mary also married Edward O'Brien but I can't find that he's Irish or related to Bridget! I suppose this is a "BIT MUCH" for you to take in right now but, I still have children etc born to Patrick, Mary and Peter, if you are interested. Just one more thing, is Torrance an Irish name?

Please, do not hesitate to contact me if you think this may be a link.

A Very Happy New Year to you.

Anne Elliott
