Mike McTigue family

Posted by Dr. Monica McTigue <monicam@pharm.sunysb.edu> on Thu, 01 May 2003, in response to Irish Heritage, posted by Cecilia Santora on Sun, 15 Sep 2002

Hello Cecilia,

Michael Francis McTigue (1923 world light-heavy weight champion) was my uncle. I am the third and youngest child of his brother James. At the time of Mike's death (Aug, 12, 1966) he left three brothers James, Patrick and Thomas and two sisters Mrs Catherine Breen and Mrs Ellen Smith. Mike also left your grandmother the former Ceclia Manning and two daughters Peggy McTigue (perhaps your mother Margaret?) and Mrs Ceclia Chaufornier (your aunt?). I believe Mike was born on Nov 26, 1892 to Patrick McTigue and Catherine Neylon (sp?). He resided in Kilnamona, Inchiquin, county of Clare and province of Munster, Ireland before immigrating to New York, USA. He is buried here in New York along with my parents and a number of other siblings (Calvary and Gate of Heaven Cemetery). I believe a number of family members reside in Ennis, Ireland since I have come across their names in the Clare Champion newspaper www.clarechampion.ie. The Clare library (url below) has collected information about Mike and there are numerous articles describing his career in journals and on the internet. Kilnamona opened a community (sports) center in Mike's name in 2001. I was quite young when Mike died, but I can tell you that he looked very much like my father and judging from articles written about him, must have had a similar sense of humor!
Please feel free to email me if you'd like to discuss this further.

Slainte!
Monica
