Possible Cherokee Heritage

Posted by Gene R. Collins <gr.ric@myfairpoint.net> on Wed, 03 Feb 2010

Peggy Walker was my ggg-materal-grandmother. She was born abt. 1788 & died abt. 1850. She was from the southwesrern area of NC or VA. She bore two illegitimate sons, John M. "Jack" Walker, born abt. 1810 & Eliza Walker, born abt. 1812, fathered by Thomas Gauldin, born abt. 1784. John and Eliza retained their mother's maiden name as their surname. Peggy and Thomas Gauldin later married, 20 Aug 1815, in Rockingham, NC and in their lifetime had seven other children who took the surname name Gauldin. As a young boy my grandfather, John W. Walker, Peggy's g-grandson and my mother, Nonie Lee Walker, Peggy's gg-grand-daughter would often tell me stories of the Cherokee beliefs, ways, habits and liftstyle. They always made a point to stress that they were part Cherokee and that their blood line contained Cherokee Blood. For the past number of years I have been deeply involved in genealogy, tracing my paternal and maternal ancestry. I have managed to locate two Peggy Walkers listed in Cherokee records. I'm seeking data or information which would allow me to verify our Peggy's Cherokee heritage and blood line. Any data, information or assistance is greatedly appreciated. Thank you. Gene R. Collins, USN Retired.
