Tipperary: Malone, Malan, Malane, etc.

Posted by Robert Berry <bobberry@stny.rr.com> on Sun, 26 Jul 2009

I need help in understanding what surname to search for back in Ireland. My g-g-g-gradfather (David "Malane" born c. 1820, Co. Tipperary) came to the U.S. c. 1846. In the 1850 - 1880 U.S. Census schedules he and his sons were listed as:
Mullowen (phonetic?), Malan, Malone, and finally Malane. Does anybody have an idea how I should conduct my search of Irish records? I have no idea which town, just Co. Tipperary (per his tombstone).

Thanks.
Bob
