Origin of Hutchins in Australia

Posted by Barry Hutchins <barry@swp.iinet.net.au> on Sun, 23 Nov 2008, in response to Surname : Hutchins, posted by Kim Hutchins on Tue, 03 May 2005

Dear Kim, I have been doing a little research on my branch of the Hutchins in Australia. You may be interested to know that my acestors came from Cornwall (where Hutchins is a very common name), arriving in Port Adelaide in 1850. He was a tin miner and his passage, with his family, was paid for by the owners of the developing copper mine at Burra, north of Adelaide. After the mine closed down (it reopened later on), the family moved to Victoria, probably attracted by the gold discovery at Ballarat. They subsequently took up farming land near Ballarat. My father (born 1915) moved to Narrandera in NSW with his mother and seven brothers and sisters in 1921 after the death of his father at Geelong. All brothers eventually bought land, either at Narandera or Griffith and became successful farmers. My family moved from Griffith to Sydney in 1955 (when I was 9). I moved to Perth in 1972 and worked at the Western Australian Museum for 35 years as a marine biologist before retiring last year. I know of no relatives of mine over here, other than my family (wife Anne and two daughters, Jenny and Susie). One of my relatives in Melbourne has prepared a complete family tree of our branch of the Hutchins, and has been to Cornwall and seen the Church where our great great grandfather and grandmother were married. I trust that this is of interest to you.
Cheers
Barry
