Harland in vale of York
Posted by Jane Harland <j.harland5341@gmail.com> on Sun, 18 May 2008, in response to The origin of the name of Harland, posted by Alan Harland on Sat, 27 May 2006
Hi,
I've managed to trace back to 1784 with certainty in the Pocklington / Warter / Fridaythorpe /Driffield area (Yorkshire Wolds) My gggggf John Harland was born in Warter in 1785, his father was William and his mother was Ann ?, problem is there are a number of possible William Harlands / Ann marriages, so a bit of a brick wall at present. John Harland was a carter and is mentioned in trades directories for 1820's carrying goods between all the above-named places, as well as weekly trips to Hull and York. John's brother Thomas Harland was a butcher in Pocklington, died 1853, his apprenticeship to a butcher in Market Weighton states their father was William, yeoman.
