last name Cobian
Posted by Edith Cobian <ecovian@yahoo.com> on Mon, 22 Nov 2004, in response to last name cobian, posted by Gilbert Cobian on Fri, 30 Jul 2004
Hi,It seems to me that all of us with the last name Cobian are in search of our ancestors. I can tell you what I know my father who is a Cobian tells me. He says the Cobian's are one huge family. I was born in Tonaya, Jalisco. My father is from Los Gonzalez, Jalisco (Ranch) most of the family I know personally resides throughout Jalisco. If you give me your parent's name who carries the Cobian last name, I can ask my father. Hopefully he can help link you to someone. A lot of the people asking where their last name came from, got their name through marriage. My grandfather Manuel Cobian just passed a couple of years ago. I can tell you it's going to be hard to pin point exactly where this name comes from. I'm sure it's Spanish, but from the little research I've done. I've found people with the Cobian last name from Italy, and even a Swedish born. So we have to research Mexico's history very well. Keep in mind Europeans took over many parts of Mexico a lot of us are mestizos (part Spanish & part indigenous)or Criollo (born from the New Spain - with spanish parents) not necessarily Mexican. Mexican is just a way of classifying us here in the U.S. -ignorant government. Keep Searching!
