COBIAN
Posted by Carolina Cobian <cmichel34@verizon.net> on Sun, 15 Nov 2009, in response to re, posted by marvin cobian on Thu, 09 Apr 2009
Hola all of my parientes.
Our last name COBIAN is a Spanish surname. The little research I have done indicates that the last name comes from Spain and it comes from the latin word "cova" meaning cave. So yes the last name is European. It seems that the Cobian relatives came to the Americas in the mid 1800's and spread out to all of North and South America. I can trace my Cobian roots to a small town in Jalisco. Tonaya is located south west of Guadalajra, Jalisco. Ajacent towns to Tonaya are El Limon, El Grullo, Carranza, Sayula, etc. My paternal great grandfather was Antonio Cobian, my paternal grandfather was Jose Maria Cobian, and my father was Octavio Cobian. They were all from Tonaya or from near by "ranchos". I do know that my great grandfathr was an orphan and he did have an older brother and a sister. I am not sure of their names. The Cobian name definitly has history.
